The glossy exterior finish showcases an exquisite interplay of contrasting minerals. Achieving the crisp, concentric ridges and perfectly flat base of this wide vessel requires immense patience and steady hand pressure on the potter's wheel to prevent the broad floor from pulling or warping during drying. Hand-thrown from mineral-dense local stoneware clay, the shallow drum base and its matching high-domed lid are meticulously trimmed and turned while leather-hard to achieve a precise, heat-retaining fit. After an initial bisque firing, the artisan coats the piece in a high-iron amber glaze, then applies sweeping, concentric rings of a reactive carbon-black slip using a spinning wheel technique. The keeper is then subjected to a rigorous 20-hour reduction cycle at 1300°C inside a wood-fired kiln, forcing the glazes to fuse, run, and pull out rich metallic dark tones that ensure no two pieces ever look identical.
