The highly vitrified, multi-toned character of this katori in 26A.jpg reflects the dramatic thermal reduction that occurs within a traditional wood-fired kiln. Hand-thrown from local, iron-rich Indian stoneware clay, the piece was baked at temperatures climbing to 1300°C. During the firing, fine fly-ash from the burning Casuarina wood circulates through the chamber, behaving as a natural flux that fuses unpredictably with the mineral-dense slips. This chemical dance causes the pale seafoam tones to stipple and pool softly over the upright contours, leaving behind a heavily iron-spotted patina and a distinctively flashed, unglazed base ring where the raw earth met the flame.
