Process & Craft
The highly vitrified, metallic sheen of this stoneware mug is a testament to the primal forces at play within a wood-fired kiln. Thrown by hand from iron-rich local Indian clay bodies, the piece was baked at 1300°C under a sustained glaze reduction. The combustion of Casuarina wood fills the kiln chamber with micro-fine fly-ash, which fuses directly with the high-iron glazes to form a glossy, variegated surface layer. As the cooling cycle begins, minute crystalline structures separate within the molten glass, giving rise to the delicate, granular stippling that dusts the rim—a permanent, unrepeatable stamp left behind by the path of the flame.
