Process & Craft
Throwing a perfectly flat-bottomed, straight-sided shallow container demands careful attention to clay compression on the wheel to avoid warping or cracking during the intensive drying process. Once the wide drum base and matching lid are shaped from local stoneware clay and dried, they undergo their primary bisque firing. The artisan then hand-paints the central botanical motif using a fine-tipped brush loaded with high-iron oxide slip, layering it over a fluid, reactive wash of cobalt blue mineral wash. The assembled piece is loaded into a high-temperature kiln and fired at 1300°C for nearly a day, forcing the natural iron impurities in the clay body to gently speckle through the creamy white surface for an authentic, unrepeatable handmade character.
