Rooted in the AVYAJ collection’s pursuit of essential beauty, this vessel’s silhouette pays homage to the timeless Indian Kalash while embracing the understated elegance of Japanese stoneware. Its flared rim and sturdy, generous base offer a balance of form that feels both ancient and contemporary, a silhouette designed for the palm and the spirit alike.
The surface is a living canvas of the elements, where the wood-fire has breathed depth into the glaze. These deep umber tones and subtle ochre highlights recall the quiet heat of smoldering embers or the rich, iron-laden furrows of a monsoon-soaked field, each mark a silent testament to the unpredictable dance between flame and mineral.
To hold this mug is to engage in a tactile meditation. The intentional horizontal ridges left by the potter’s wheel invite the fingertips to linger, grounding the user in the present moment and transforming the simple act of a daily brew into a slow, sacred ritual of intimacy and warmth.

Process & Craft
Each piece begins with locally sourced Indian stoneware clay, hand-thrown to capture the unique energy of the artisan. The transformation occurs within the intense atmosphere of a wood-burning kiln, where it is fired for up to 20 hours at 1300°C. We utilize Casuarina wood ash, which, during the peak of the firing, melts and travels across the clay’s surface to create natural ‘runs’ and ‘drips’. This volatile, high-heat process ensures that the soul of the fire is permanently etched into the ceramic, resulting in a piece that can never be replicated.
Sustainability Practices
Made in serene, low-waste pottery studios that prioritize mindful production. All materials used — clays, glazes, oxides — are natural and non-toxic. High-temperature firing ensures long product life, reducing breakage and replacement cycles. Crafted in small batches to support ethical production and minimize overconsumption. Each mug embodies a slow craft philosophy, valuing longevity over mass production.
