An exquisite study in structural contrast, this striking vessel from our Adwai collection anchors your interior with a blend of raw earth and disciplined craftsmanship. The wheel-thrown, tapered stoneware base is crowned by a high, sweeping overhead handle of hand-bent rattan, bridging the nostalgic charm of country forage baskets with the clean, elevated lines of contemporary studio art.

The surface of the vase becomes a theater for spontaneous, high-contrast imagery. A speckled, sandy amber-ochre glaze coats the main body, setting a warm, textured backdrop for a powerful, vertical abstract brushstroke in glossy iron-black that slices down the front. This deep, reflective pooling extends up over the undulating rim, while the overhead handle is meticulously lashed to the ceramic ears using traditional fiber bindings, adding an organic warmth that perfectly softens the vitrified clay beneath.

Designed to command attention as a standalone sculptural element or to provide a stable, weighted base for minimalist dried botanicals and fresh branches, this piece transitions seamlessly across diverse design sensibilities. The physical interplay between the glossy, dramatic iron work, the grit of the speckled clay, and the woven fiber creates a multi-sensory aesthetic rooted in quiet, mindful presence.

Process & Craft

Emerging from a thoughtful cross-disciplinary process, this vessel brings together classic wheel-throwing and historical basketry traditions. The clay form is shaped by hand using mineral-rich Indian stoneware clay, then vitrified over 20 grueling hours at 1300°C in a wood-fired kiln, allowing airborne ash to trace localized highlights across the rim. Following the firing, the piece is handed over to master weavers who meticulously steam-bend, fit, and bind the seasoned rattan handle directly through the fired stoneware loops—a complex, multi-medium assembly that guarantees no two pieces are ever identical.
